In reality, there were multiple reasons that led to the show's fate. When freaks and geeks ended, lindsay was off with her friend to follow the grateful dead on tour, her ex nick was getting into disco and trying to get over her, and the rest of the gang was doing a little of their own growing up. It winning awards would have proved them wrong but the fact it didn't only fueled their belief that it was a bad show. Every character is solid gold but bill haverchuck is brilliant. If you dig around online you can find an interview with the creators where they discuss what their plans would have been for stoeylines in season 2, which would probably be of interest to you.
