Cut out the layers and box cover. Use a scalpel to cut out the layers and shave off 1 cm (1/3 of an inch) off the length of each layer's side, to make the bottom layers bigger than the top ones. Use a pointed screw driver to create folding lines in the box cover.
The middle box is 9″ x 9″ scored at 3″ all around. The smallest box is 7 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ scored at 2 1/2″ all around. When all sides have been scored, cut out the four corners.
Trace around the top half of the heart. Place the heart template in one corner, centering on the scored lines. Then, with sharp scissors, cut around the rounded tops.
Fold the hearts to the inside. Use the scoring tool to press over the fold lines and set this layer to the side. Repeat for each of the box sizes.
Use the blunt edge of an art knife to create smooth, easy fold lines, referencing the template lines. Fold all the box and lid pieces along these lines. Make four parallel cuts in each lid, as per the template reference markings.
This template is for the lid of the exploding box. You'll find the other pieces on the previous pages. It is slightly larger than the base which allows the 'exploding' sides to be held snuggly before the lid is taken off.
